HSS SHELL REAMER

An HSS (High-Speed Steel) shell reamer is a specialized cutting tool with a hollow, fluted body that is mounted on a separate arbor to finish and enlarge existing holes to a precise diameter. These reamers are used for creating smooth finishes and are known for their ability to withstand high cutting temperatures, making them ideal for applications requiring high precision and durability, particularly for large-diameter holes.
Key features and purpose
  • Material: Made from High-Speed Steel (HSS) for strength, hardness, and heat resistance.
  • Design: It has a hollow, cylindrical shape with a tapered hole for mounting on a separate, tapered arbor that provides the drive. Driving lugs on the arbor engage with the slots in the reamer body for a strong connection.
  • Function: Used to enlarge holes that have already been drilled, removing a small amount of material to achieve a precise size and a smooth, high-quality surface finish.
  • Hole size: Specifically designed for larger diameter holes, often starting from 3/4 inch and up.
  • Fluting: Available with straight or spiral flutes. Left-hand spiral flutes are better suited for blind holes, while straight flutes are better for through holes.
Advantages
  • Interchangeable: The shell design allows the cutting head to be replaced without replacing the entire tool, making them cost-effective for different hole sizes.
  • Precision: Delivers a precise and smooth final hole diameter, minimizing burrs and rough edges.
  • Durability: The HSS material provides durability and a long service life, particularly when used within their specified operating parameters.
  • High-quality finish: Provides a clean, non-chatter surface finish, even at higher cutting speeds compared to some conventional reamers.
